I understand why people have become cynical about politicians who will talk a good game but never deliver. And I get it. The reality is we generally only hear about the bad politicians, who I believe are in the minority. There are many who actually believe in making their community better.
The Canadian system doesn’t allow political parties at the local level, which means all candidates and elected officials are independent entities, and not controlled by a higher political figure like a Premier, Prime Minister or even the mayor. This means they can truly speak for the people they were elected to serve. If only a handful of people chose to vote then they will most likely listen to them. Even if you didn’t support your elected officials it is still important to ask meaningful questions because their decisions at council will directly affect local services that you and your family depend on.
Over the past few weeks I have been reviewing the results from the 2022 Municipal election. I have created 2 dashboards that clearly show the outcomes from the 2022 Municipal election and just how few people decided to make their voice heard.
Real change doesn’t come from complaining on Social Media. True change happens by showing up and speaking up. Regardless of your personal view it is important to encourage everyone to take time to decide what type of community they want to live in.
